It is known that the Gymnasium of the Greek Community of Thessaloniki had, in the 19th century, a particularly rich and significant library with rare manuscripts and valuable editions.
With the aim of conducting systematic archival and bibliographic research, a special Research Team was formed within the framework of I.A.N.E., and at the same time, a broad program for the search and cataloging of the library's publications was developed.
The oldest publication was issued in 1532 and the newest, which concludes the catalog, in 1911. This collection provides answers to questions regarding social life, the spiritual character of the city, the quality of education provided during the Ottoman rule, and at the same time, it clearly illuminates the path of Hellenism in Thessaloniki.
We hope that this effort will serve as a catalyst for the restoration of the library of the Greek Gymnasium of Thessaloniki and the utilization of the valuable publications and manuscripts for future research.
