As noted by J.N. Forkel (Bach's biographer in his work "Johann Seb. Bach. His Life, Art, and Work," 1802), Bach likely wrote this work for some English nobleman. This information is supported only by a note "Written for the English" that was on the inside cover page of the suite in A major in manuscript C. The title "English Suites" only became widespread after the composer's death.
