JOHAN HERMAN BERENS was a Swedish composer and pianist of German descent, born in Hamburg on April 7, 182. After studying with his father KARL BERENS, a flutist and composer, as well as with REISSIGER and CZERNY, he settled in Sweden in 1847.

He performed at chamber music concerts in Stockholm and served as the conductor of the royal orchestra of OEREBRO from 1848 to 1860. He returned to Stockholm in 1860, where he became the music director at the Mindre Theatre and the Dramatic Theatre. In 1861, he was appointed a teacher of composition and orchestration at the Conservatoire of Stockholm and attained the title of professor in 1868. He was also a piano teacher to Queen Lovisa.
