From a very young age, still a teenager, T. K. Papatzonis entered the literary field. He translated French, Spanish, German, Anglo-American literature and composed hundreds of poems, introducing free verse to Greece for the first time.
At the same time, he was a fierce critic and essayist, leaving behind an extensive body of work on Greek and foreign literature. Besides his persistent call for renewal within the domestic literary scene, his thinking was largely influenced by his deep, dual (Orthodox and Catholic) religiosity.
The book follows the intellectual development of critic Papatzonis through a wide range of - sometimes uncollected - texts (articles, reviews, essays, travel impressions, letters), published between 1915-1976, as well as through unpublished material.
Over a span of about sixty years, Papatzonis narrates, with his powerful literary pen, another story of Greek and, more broadly, Western literature. Language issues, modernism and surrealism, reception of the premises of Sikelian and Cavafy poetry, post-war reality and existential anxiety are just some of the diverse pieces that compose the mosaic of his interests and the literary debates he actively engaged in.
Wrongly marginalized until today, this talented, unique, and multifaceted creator deserves our attention.
