JOHAN HERMAN BERENS, a Swedish composer and pianist of German descent, was born in Hamburg on April 7, 182 and died on May 9 in Stockholm. After studying with his father KARL BERENS, who was a flutist and composer, as well as with REISSIGER and CZERNY, he settled in Sweden in 1847.

There, he played in chamber music concerts in Stockholm, while also serving as the conductor of the royal orchestra of OEREBRO from 1848 to 1860. He returned to Stockholm in 1860 to become the music director at the Mindre Theatre and the Dramatic Theatre. In 1861, he was appointed a teacher of composition and orchestration at the Conservatoire in Stockholm and obtained the title of professor in 1868. He was also a piano teacher to Queen Lovisa.
