Description

Everything in Greece absorbs you and rewards you. There is no rock or stream without a battle or a myth, a miracle, a superstition; and the words and events, almost all strange or memorable, thicken around the path of the traveler, with every step he takes.

Mani, in the southernmost peninsula of Europe, is one of the wildest and most isolated areas in Greece. Separated from the imposing Taygetus mountain range and cut off from the Aegean and Ionian Seas, it maintains a vibrant connection to its ancient past, more so than to the present.

A journey through this unruly and historically rich region, guided by the greatest travel writer of our time.

THE PRESS WROTE

Very different from the usual travel descriptions… Excellent narrative, filled with love, tenderness, and enthusiasm. Daily Telegraph

This traveler understands Greece and the Greeks, their language, dialects, humor, and self-irony, their generosity, and their liveliness. Daily Express

Read an excerpt

The evening sunbeams fell obliquely through the mountain crevices, filling the winding hollow of Lakedaimon with gentle green and golden shades. The sluggish meanders of Eurotas had now shrunk into a thread, marked by the scent of sweet bay leaves with tufts of cool, green, pointed leaves, and beautiful flowers like pink and white paper, above a single water memory: a memory whose sparkle, during the dry months to come, would prevent their bright petals from withering. Poplars, willows, benches, and plane trees trembled along the banks, and olive groves sprinkled the gentle slopes with silvery-green, with the trunk of each tree casting a longer shadow now. In many places, the harsh sunlight fell on the threshing circles, each as flat and perfectly circular as the base of a cylindrical temple, shining like a coin now.
