When the book was published in 1949, just a few months before his death from tuberculosis, Orwell had to defend it to his leftist audience as follows: "My recent novel does NOT attack socialism or the British Labour Party (of which I am a supporter), but highlights the distortions to which a centralized economy is subject and which have partially occurred in communism and fascism." [...]
The nightmarish atmosphere of political suspicion, surveillance, and fear, expressed in Homage to Catalonia, is a recognizable feature of 1984 as well, and it relates less to fascists than to Stalinists and their efforts to suppress those who opposed them. Ultimately, as Orwell's biographer, Bernard Crick, observes, the experience in Spain was what convinced him that the Communist Party was working against the revolution, and that between Stalinism and fascism there are the similarities implied in his two most well-known works today, Animal Farm (1944) and 1984 (the title arises from the inversion of the last two digits of the year in which the work was written, 1948).
The mistrust that follows Orwell in the realm of leftist intellectualism (including the Greek) is related to his recognition of this similarity, combined with another element attributed to 1984: the absence of any horizon of political hope that would serve as a counterbalance to the nightmarish world of the text. This absence was even deemed responsible for the ideological appropriation of the novel during the Cold War against socialism in general, aimed at defending capitalism as the only moral counterproposal to totalitarianism.
