First edition: June 2021
The depth of the suffering I experienced has no word to give it form. To become a whale, one must drink seawater, to taste the bittersweet flavor that every story leaves behind. Usually in life, we have choices, but there are moments when you cannot choose how you want to live. That is how my life began, without choice, without dreams.
Reza Golami was born in 1988 in the city of Kabul, Afghanistan. In Lost Identities, he narrates his story: his childhood in a country torn apart by civil wars and ethnic strife, and his migrations first to Pakistan and then to Iran, until in 2006, at the age of seventeen, he managed to reach Greece.
His shocking testimony, written without melodrama and accusations, allows the reader to understand definitively and irrevocably why the prospect of a deflated boat being tossed around in the waves seems to a refugee like a journey toward freedom.
