Learning disabilities should be distinguished from special educational needs, which refer to serious learning problems that require the intervention of 'specialists' to overcome or at least reduce, and not just the classroom teacher.
Children with learning disabilities primarily face issues in reading, spelling, writing, and mathematics. This is because each word requires decoding when linked to the sounds of these symbols. We educators should adapt our teaching methods according to the type of child.
Often, we should combine visual and auditory methods with touch, as many children learn more easily as mixed perception types. These children should be addressed either within their classroom with personalized teaching or through supplementary instruction mainly provided by the classroom teacher and secondarily by another teacher at the school.
However, under no circumstances should they be placed in integration classes, which only accept children with special educational needs. Supplementary teaching generates hopes of achieving its goals if systematic planning is carried out. It may prove to be the best way to integrate children into their classroom if organized on solid foundations.
