Electrolyte disturbances and acid-base balance disorders are very common in clinical practice and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Additionally, they may be the first manifestation of several diseases, contributing to their early diagnosis.
This manuscript is the culmination of extensive research, writing, and teaching involvement and is aimed at medical students who wish to deepen their knowledge as well as clinical physicians who encounter these disturbances on a daily basis. It is our highest ambition to serve as a useful tool in the daily practice of medicine, as it attempts to describe in an inductive manner the causes, symptoms, diagnostic approaches, and appropriate therapeutic management of these disturbances.
Particular effort has been made to clearly analyze the underlying mechanisms of electrolyte disturbances and acid-base balance. Knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms makes navigating the often difficult paths of these disturbances more engaging and solidifies the acquired knowledge.
In the last part of the book, clinical cases are analyzed in detail, allowing readers to verify and reinforce their knowledge.
