"It's getting dark. I know you're scared... you see all of them... now that the light is fading and night is coming, they are afraid just like you. I have lived this terror of the night since I was twenty and now I'm fifty. For thirty years now I have walked this endless path of the night. This one is ten, that one forty, this one fifty. Soon the lights will go out. Only a few will remain. Just enough to outline our shadows on the walls, on the dry ground, in the cells and the bathrooms, our shadows, that is us. Come on, let's go inside. You will experience the grandeur of the night in the asylum. This way, you'll never forget us. At night, most people are afraid to sleep. They wait wide awake for the sun to rise so they can find some peace. To catch a little sleep to endure. At night, the asylum never quiets. You'll see. Come on, are you trembling? Everyone is trembling here, you're not alone..."
"Are you still trembling?" said the interlocutor. "Sit here on this bed without blankets. Enjoy the night. No matter how tired you are, you won't sleep. Terror grips you! The show that is about to begin is very interesting, authenticity as your art should be. I guarantee you it's a great performance, not boring at all, you'll never forget it, until you die..."
"Night" is the eight stories presented in this book that emerged from a desperate search for creative escape during the lockdown due to the pandemic. They came almost spontaneously during walks by the sea in Paleo Faliro, a daily habit that intensified during the city's closure. A small espresso in hand, music from my mobile's headphones, a cigarette, a lonely bench, the waves and the seabirds were the supplies of inspiration. During the walk, the idea would come, and upon returning home, the story would be recorded. The intention was a simple as possible exposition of events, as it would be through oral, vivid storytelling. I wanted to speak about freedom and confinement, love, dreams, desires, worries about the future, sadness, fears, loneliness, the search, theater, loss, and expectations. These texts are a reconstruction from memories, real and imagined events, nightmares, beliefs, dreams, and hopes. I hope the reader finds a piece of their own desperate search and existence.
