Teddy, a philosophy professor at an American university, brings his wife Ruth to visit his father, uncle, and two brothers at his old home in London after years of estrangement. During the intense conflict that follows, Ruth becomes the focus of their struggle for dominance.
"The Homecoming" can be seen as a Freudian work concerning sons filled with subconscious Oedipal desires. It can also be viewed as an ethological study of a group of human animals fighting for territory. Precisely because Pinter never moralizes or resolves the situation, it is a play that, when masterfully performed, continues to haunt our dreams.
"The Homecoming" premiered at the Aldwych Theatre, London, in 1965.
