Hunched over in his small office in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith rewrites the past for the needs of a totalitarian regime. The government controls everything through telescreens, while the Thought Police reveals any deviant behavior, all under the watchful eye of Big Brother. A power that manages fear through the threat of internal and external enemies.
The citizen, under the grip of fear, surrenders his power and fundamental rights and obediently submits to it. However, Winston, a hero without heroic traits, internally rebels against the totalitarian world in which he lives. With a longing for truth and human dignity, he makes efforts to shape his future freely, but soon discovers that the true price of freedom is betrayal.
The dystopian masterpiece by George Orwell, 1984, is perhaps the most widely read novel of the twentieth century.
