They retreat to a cottage in Devonshire, but not before Elinor and Edward Ferrars develop a mutual attraction. In Devonshire, Marianne falls desperately in love with John Willoughby, a charming yet unscrupulous man. Each sister discovers that their suitors are engaged to other women, and the story revolves around the different ways they handle this misfortune.
