Rene Descartes (1569-1650), the "father" of modern philosophy, is undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers in history: his genius lies at the core of our modern intellectual identity. Breaking with the conventions of his time and suffering persecutions from the Church as a result, Descartes in his writings - most of which are philosophical classics - tried to answer the central questions concerning the self, God, the freedom of the will, and knowledge, using the science of thought instead of received wisdom based on the principles of faith.
