Description

Since its publication in 1990, Athenaze: An Introduction to Ancient Greek has helped tens of thousands of students learn the classical Greek language. The much-anticipated third edition combines the best features of traditional and modern teaching methods, offering a unique learning path that allows students to read coherent Greek narratives from the beginning and guides them in reading complete classical texts.

The course is carefully designed to maintain students' interest, starting in Book I with a fictional narrative about a family of Athenian farmers set in a specific historical context (432-431 BC). This narrative, combined with myths and stories from the Persian Wars, gradually gives way in Book II to adapted passages from Thucydides, Plato, and Herodotus, and eventually to excerpts from the original Greek texts of the Bacchae, Thucydides, and Aristophanes' Acharnians. Essays related to relevant aspects of ancient Greek culture and history are also integrated throughout the book.
