Description

Hanya Yanagihara's novel, A Little Life, is a harrowing and sad work that explores brotherly love and the limits of human endurance. With over a million copies sold, it has become a bestseller and garnered numerous accolades, including Fiction of the Year at the British Book Awards and nominations for the Booker Prize and the Women's Prize.

The story follows four graduates from a small Massachusetts college, who move to New York, facing poverty and uncertainty, with only friendship and their ambitions as support. The protagonists, the kind and handsome Willem, the caustic JB, the disillusioned architect Malcolm, and the mysterious Jude, will face the challenges of life as their relationships deepen and darken, against a backdrop of dependency, success, and pride.

However, the greatest challenge they find each of them has is Jude, a frighteningly talented lawyer who as an adult is increasingly broken, with his mind and body scarred from a horrific childhood. Yanagihara thoroughly immerses us in the lives and thoughts of these characters, making it difficult for us to leave them behind.

This review is about the cover: Soft

⚠️Trigger warnings: sexual abuse, child abuse, verbal violence, psychological manipulation, self-harm, PTSD
▫️A few words about the book: "A Little Life" is one of the most moving and at the same time harsh books ever written. The novel follows the lives of 4 friends as they grow up, discover life, and manage their personal relationships. Mainly, we follow as the main character the life of Jude, whose story is the hardest you will ever read.
▪️Style/Writing of the book: The writing is incredibly literary and atmospheric. Even though it is a large book, from the very first page you realize that it will be a heavy book, with difficult themes, as it does not prepare you for what is coming in the slightest.
▫️Why I loved it: It is one of the most genuine books I have read. The way it doesn't sugarcoat situations makes it authentic and even though everything seems wrong, there are those small moments of hope and humanity that give you the courage to keep reading.
▪️Why you should read it: If you are looking for a book that will leave a mark on you and make you wonder, even cry as you read it, then yes, this is for you! Of course, if you are more sensitive to the book's triggers, it would be good to avoid it or at least read it knowingly, as it requires composure and emotional availability.
