According to COLREG 72, all all-round lights must be placed higher than the side lights, so that it is easier for passing vessels to calculate their position in relation to yours and direction.

If placed low, they may be obscured by a passenger or an object. The range of all-round lights includes telescopic, foldable and meets all needs. They can be used on sailing boats less than 20m in length.
