WINNER OF THE LONDON HELLENIC PRIZE 2019
Alice Oswald is in her prime in this electrifying new work. It is a book-length poem - a collage of watery stories, mostly from the Odyssey - about a secondary character left behind on a rocky island. It is not a translation, but a careful examination of the sea surrounding him.
There are many voices in the poem but no proper names, although the dominant spirit is Proteus, the shape-shifting sea god. We recognize other mythical characters - the Sun, Icarus, Alcyone, Philoctetes, Calypso, Clytemnestra, Orpheus, Poseidon, Hermes - who appear and disappear in the poem.
Reading Nobody is like watching the ocean: a destabilizing experience that becomes mesmerizing, almost hallucinatory, as we move away from earthly expectations and follow the circular shoals of sea voices into a weave of sound, light, and water - fluid, abstract, and moving with the motion of the waves. As with all of Alice Oswald's works, this is poetry designed for the human voice, but this poem takes on the qualities of another element: dense, muscular, and wet.
One man has the character of dust, another has an arrow for a soul, but their stories end somewhere in the sea.
