The half-brothers Michel and Bruno share the same mother but have little else in common. Michel is a molecular biologist, thinker, and idealist, a man without a love life and with few social relationships. In contrast, Bruno is a vain individual, though more so in theory than in practice, his endless desire rarely rewarded. Both are representative members of our isolated society, where religion has given way to shallow 'new age' philosophies and love has been reduced to pitiful sexual connections. 'Atomised' narrates the stories of the two brothers, but the real subject of the novel is the disintegration of modern society and its assumptions, political correctness, and its caustic and penetrating observations on everything from anthropology to girls' magazine problem pages. A deconstruction of modern lives and loves. Throughout the reading, the work is funny, sharp, annoying, instructive, touching, and impetuous.
