Description

Description

The publishing house "InfoGnomon" delivers to Greeks one of the most influential, perhaps the most heraldic book of our time. Forty interviews by Giorgos Lianis from 1970 to the present. The title "Conversing with the 20th Century" is literal. The author... conversed with great personalities who left their mark primarily in the 20th century.

Ritsos, Elytis, Varnalis, Eggonopoulos, Skarimpas, Anagnostakis, Karouzos, Christianopoulos, Tsitsanis, Bagandreas, Koun, Tsarouchis, Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Papadopoulos, Panagoulis, Moustaklis, Kampanellis, Katrakis, Horn, Lampertis, Vengos, Kourkoulos, Mercouri, Papa, Dantounakis, Alexandrakis, Voyiouklaki, Laskaris, Kazantzidis, Bithikotsis, Mouschouri, Galis, Savvopoulos, Markopoulos, Mikroutsikos, Smoktounovski, Plisetskaya, Waida, and Falacci form the "ark" of Giorgos Lianis.

The book is 647 pages long, featuring rare photographs and documents. The publication is greeted by former President of the Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos, Mikis Theodorakis (who calls Lianis the "poet of journalism"), Lefteris Papadopoulos (who says that "Lianis is the best Greek journalist"), and Kostas Laliotis. The foreword is written by Evangelos Venizelos.

This book is written by a "frontline" journalist who has worked for half a century in the largest Greek magazines and newspapers. With the captivating pen of the author, the intellectual beacons of the Greek archipelago come alive, revealing visions and dramas of Hellenism.

The incisiveness of the questions, the boldness, and the breakthrough into the psyche of the 40 "protagonists" result in the book being dramatically relevant. However, at the same time, it is an optimistic book, essential for people who care not only about their personal fate but also about the fate of the great country where they were born.

Finally, the book is a "do not forget me" from the very "protagonists" themselves, who were loved by the Greeks, some adored, and who drew the borders of Greece far away.

The talented journalist is always ready for anything. His equipment includes cultivation, instinct, curiosity, investigative spirit, and courage, which must far exceed the usual measure. Relatively quickly, he gains the confidence of someone experienced in asking the right questions. Those that both the average and the absolutely specialized reader would want to ask. Both of these types of readers are, after all, simple abstractions. Every reader is a personal and unique case. And the good journalist must address each potential reader individually.

The journalist is, of course, a servant of the moment, of current events, of the instant. The seed of his words is ephemeral but far from sterile. It is enough for him to understand the ways in which the moment is incorporated into History, the ways in which events become situations. Above all, he must understand the role played by people, by individuals, and their complexity.

The interview is perhaps the most difficult and demanding chapter of the journalistic art. Obviously, I do not underestimate good reporting, political or economic analysis, the essay, the chronicle, the column, the concise and insightful commentary. But everything is condensed into the meeting and conversation with a person. Especially when that person is iconic. Even more so when a person has already passed into History during their lifetime. Or when their position in the field of art allows them to refer to their own personal code, without having any reason to use a common idiom, as happens in politics, sports, or culture before someone exceeds the conventional limit.
