The provinces of Lidoriki and Malandrinou were among the first in Sterea Greece to rise up in late March 1821, following the example of Morea. They were also the first to expel or eliminate the ruling Ottomans, and until April 1825, they remained untouched and free. Their position made them, once again, in August 1828, the first definitively free provinces of Roumelia.
But how did all this happen? Who made it happen? What was happening in the provinces just before the Uprising, and in what environment did the Revolution break out in the provinces? What did their people cultivate, and who determined the land and taxation? What do the sources testify about the local leaders of the Revolution? What do they recount about the simple fighter, who followed the leader wherever circumstances and the needs of the Struggle dictated?
How did civilians, women, and children experience the war, and where did they find refuge during the raids? What was the local version of the civil wars? Were there political oppositions? Why did the provinces submit in June '26?
These difficult questions are addressed in Andreas Kyteas' book "On the Road to Freedom, The Provinces of Lidoriki and Malandrinou (Doris) in the Revolution (1821-1828)". It is an archival study, with a detailed presentation of historical events and extensive reference to the social and economic environment in which the Uprising broke out and culminated in August 1828. The publication of the book was supported by the Municipality of Dorida. The historian and journalist Tasos Kostopoulos provides the preface, and the mayor of Dorida, George Kapetsonis, delivers the greeting.
