Long-time owner of Motorola phones (about 10 years now, with the Moto G (3rd Gen), Moto G5 Plus, Moto One Vision), I considered switching brands since I was not satisfied with the last one on the list (issues with the hardware). In this price range, my options were between:
- Xiaomi (good nominal performance, poor software optimization)
- Huawei (good hardware but, aside from the lack of Google services, unfortunately lost in certain aspects like curved screen)
- Samsung (very poor battery, excessively expensive for what they offer, and several reports of problems with their mid-range phones)
- Other Chinese brands (not an option since Huawei and Xiaomi were not sufficient in this price range)
So, I decided to give Motorola another chance since the competition did not offer anything better. In the end, I believe I made the right choice. After 2-3 weeks of using the phone, I have noticed the following:
- Vanilla Android: The reason why I keep coming back to Motorola after all these years. No lag in the 10+ years I have used these phones, flawless user experience of the OS, without the need for the "unbelievable" hardware that many advertise but few actually use. The company has added so much now, with its UI implementation being one of the best ever. A big plus is the new "Ready for" software that allows easy connection of the phone to TVs, etc., making it more like a PC (especially in desktop mode, the experience is perfect).
- Display: Truly impressive OLED display with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz and variable refresh rate options (something that Samsung does not have in this price range). The peek display is now at its best with this screen, which, although not an always-on display like Samsung's, is definitely a worthy alternative. Additionally, the screen's touch responsiveness is amazing!
- Camera: Good camera, but not something extraordinary, with very good software (AI assistant that suggests different modes depending on the situation), many extra features like Ultra resolution and night mode that make a difference for those who want to delve into photography. On the other hand, the macro camera is average, and unfortunately, the phone does not have OIS (but it does have EIS).
- Battery: Turbo charging at 33W with a corresponding charger in the package (something that other brands like Samsung do not do), very good battery life (1.5-2 days) for the usage I have (anything except games). The fast charging really comes in handy, and I believe the average user does not need anything faster.
- Sound: Very good quality and volume in calls (microphone and earpiece). The speaker has a very good volume for music but average quality.
- Build: The size is just right, feels very good in the hand, beautiful design with a flat back, very lightweight with a weight that is not too high to tire the hand during one-handed use (e.g., One Vision). Overall, good build quality, nothing extraordinary. One downside (which probably many other phones also have now) is that due to the camera module protruding from the casing, the phone cannot lay flat on its back.
- Fingerprint sensor: Fast, although it could be a bit more accurate. The addition of the extra gesture by Motorola is very nice, displaying a small shortcuts bar when touched twice. The transition from rear-mounted sensors takes a bit of getting used to. Naturally, you can store up to 5 different fingerprints.
- Accessories: Unfortunately, there is a complete lack of accessories (cases, etc.). Generally, I managed to find only 1 back case from a "well-known brand" in stores in Greece and abroad, with the options afterwards being cheap generic Chinese ones. Perhaps there are more options available in book cases.
Overall, it is a purchase that I consider worth the money, a worthy competitor to similar phones in this range. Vanilla Android is now available in very few brands in the market (see Google Pixel, Nokia) and it is something that someone should try in order to understand what it is about. Most companies focus on marketing with flashy hardware specs to attract people with the mindset of "getting more for their money". However, in a smartphone, the software plays an equally important role and the advertised performance is debunked, either by a bad UI or by the lack of stability and/or support. In other words, all that glitters is not gold.
* Update after about 10 months: After 10 months of use, I remain very satisfied with the phone. I have the following additional observations compared to my initial evaluation:
1) The photos that the phone can take are indeed very good, but the right setting needs to be used and the appropriate attention needs to be given in each case. Compared to the Pixel 6a, it produces similar (but not identical) quality with a little effort. Especially the night photos (with Night Vision mode) are very good!
2) The battery performance seems to have decreased significantly, although it doesn't play a big role (at least for the way I use it) as fast charging is extremely helpful.
Πολυετής πλέον κάτοχος κινητών της Motorola (περίπου 10 χρόνια τώρα, με τα Moto G (3rd Gen), Moto G5 Plus, Moto One Vision), εξέτασα το ενδεχόμενο να αλλάξω μάρκα μιας και δεν έμεινα ευχαριστημένος από το τελευταίο στη λίστα (θέματα με το hardware). Σε αυτά τα χρήματα οι επιλογές μου ήταν ανάμεσα σε:
- Xiaomi (καλές ονομαστικές επιδόσεις, κακό software optimization)
- Huawei (καλό hardware αλλά (άσχετα από την έλλειψη Google services) δυστυχώς για εμένα έχανε στα σημεία πχ curved οθόνη)
- Samsung (πολύ κακή μπαταρία, υπερβολικά ακριβά γι αυτά που προσφέρουν και με αρκετές αναφορές για προβλήματα στα mid range κινητά της)
- Λοιπές κινέζικες μάρκες (οχι στις επιλογές απο τη στιγμή που δεν ήταν επαρκή τα Huawei και Xiaomi σε αυτά τα χρήματα)
Έτσι πήρα την απόφαση να δώσω άλλη μια ευκαιρία στη Motorola μιας και ο ανταγωνισμός δε μου προσέφερε κάτι καλύτερο. Εν τέλει πιστεύω ότι έκανα τη σωστή επιλογή. Στις 2-3 εβδομάδες χρήσης του κινητού λοιπόν έχω να παρατηρήσω τα εξής:
- Vanilla android: Ο λόγος που τόσα χρόνια επιστρέφω στη Motorola. Κανένα κόλλημα στα 10+ χρόνια που έχω αυτά τα κινητά, άψογη εμπειρία χρήσης του OS, χωρίς ανάγκη για το "απίστευτο" hardware που διαφημίζουν πολλοί αλλά χρησιμοποιούν ελάχιστοι. Πλέον η εταιρεία έχει προσθέσει τόσα όσα, με το UI implementation της να είναι στα καλύτερα του ever. Μεγάλο plus το νέο software "Ready for" που επιτρέπει πανεύκολη σύνδεση του κινητού με τηλεοράσεις κλπ, καθιστώντας το πλέον σαν pc (ειδικά στο desktop mode η εμπειρία ειναι τέλεια).
- Οθόνη: Πραγματικά εντυπωσιακή OLED με μέγιστο ρυθμό ανανέωσης 144Hz και variable refresh rate στις επιλογές της (κάτι που πχ δεν έχουν τα Samsung σε αυτό το price range). To peek display πλεον στα καλύτερα του με αυτήν την οθόνη, που ενω δεν είναι σε καμία περίπτωση το always on της Samsung, είναι σίγουρα μια αξια εναλλακτική. Συν τοις άλλοις η απόκριση της οθόνης (touch responsiveness) είναι καταπληκτική!
- Κάμερα: Kαλή κάμερα αλλά όχι και κάτι εξωπραγματικό, με πολύ καλό software (ΑΙ assistant που προτείνει διαφορετικά modes ανάλογα με την περίπτωση), πολλά έξτρα features όπως Ultra resolution και night mode που κάνουν τη διαφορά για όποιον θέλει να ασχοληθεί. Η macro camera απ την άλλη είναι μέτρια και δυστυχώς το κινητό δεν έχει OIS (έχει όμως EIS).
- Μπαταρία: Turbo charging στα 33W με αντίστοιχο φορτιστή στη συσκευασία (πράγμα που δεν κάνουν άλλες μάρκες πχ Samsung), διάρκεια μπαταρίας πάρα πολύ καλή (1.5-2 μέρες) για τη χρήση που κάνω (οτιδήποτε εκτός από games). Η γρήγορη φόρτιση πραγματικά σου λύνει τα χέρια και πιστεύω ο μέσος χρήστης δεν χρειάζεται κάτι πιο γρήγορο.
- Ήχος: Πολύ καλή ποιότητα και ένταση στις κλήσεις (σε μικρόφωνο και ακουστικό). Το ηχείο σε μουσική έχει πάρα πολύ καλή ένταση αλλά μέτρια ποιότητα.
- Κατασκευή: Μέγεθος ό,τι πρέπει, πολύ καλό στο χέρι, όμορφο design με επίπεδη πίσω πλευρά, πολύ ελαφρύ με το βάρος να μην είναι τόσο ψηλά ώστε να κουράσει σε χρήση με το ένα χέρι (βλ. One vision) . Γενικά καλή κατασκευή, όχι κάτι εξωπραγματικό. Ένα μείον (που μάλλον πλέον έχουν επίσης πολλά άλλα κινητά), είναι ότι λόγω του camera module που προεξέχει από το casing, το κινητό δεν μπορεί να κάτσει flat στην πίσω πλευρά του.
- Fingerprint sensor: Γρήγορος αν και ίσως θα μπορούσε να είναι μισό κλικ πιο ακριβής. Πολύ ωραία η προσθήκη του έξτρα gesture από τη Motorola που εμφανίζει ένα μικρό shortcuts bar όταν τον αγγίζεις 2 φορές. Η μετάβαση από οπίσθια τοποθετημένους σενσορες θελει λίγο συνήθεια. Φυσικά μπορείς να αποθηκεύσεις μέχρι 5 διαφορετικά δάχτυλα/αποτυπώματα.
- Αξεσουάρ: Δυστυχώς είναι παντελής η έλλειψη σε αξεσουάρ (θήκες κλπ). Γενικά κατάφερα να βρω μόνο 1 θήκη back case "γνωστής μάρκας" από καταστήματα Ελλάδας και εξωτερικού, με τις επιλογές μετά να είναι φτηνές generic κινέζικες. Ίσως σε book cases να υπάρχουν περισσότερες επιλογές.
Γενικότερα είναι μια αγορά που θεωρώ ότι αξίζει σε αυτά τα χρήματα, άξιος αντίπαλος των αντίστοιχων κινητών σε αυτό το range. Το vanilla android υπάρχει πλέον σε ελάχιστες μάρκες της αγοράς (βλ. Google Pixel, Nokia) και είναι κάτι που πρέπει να δοκιμάσει κάποιος για να κατάλαβει περί τίνος πρόκεται. Οι περισσότερες εταιρείες στοχεύουν στο marketing με βαρύγδουπα hardware specs για να προσελκύσουν κόσμο με το σκεπτικό "να πάρω περισσότερα για τα λεφτά μου". Παρόλα αυτά σε ενα smartphone το software παίζει το ίδιο σημαντικό ρόλο και οι διαφημιζόμενες επιδόσεις καταρρίπτονται, είτε από κάποιο κακό UI είτε από την έλλειψη σταθερότητας ή/και support. Κοινώς, ό,τι λάμπει δεν είναι χρυσός.
* Update ~10μήνου : Μετά από 10 μήνες χρήσης, παραμένω πολύ ευχαριστημένος με το κινητό. Έχω τις εξής έξτρα παρατηρήσεις σε σχέση με την αρχική μου αξιολόγηση:
1) Οι φωτογραφίες που μπορεί να βγάλει το κινητό είναι όντως πολύ καλές, αρκεί όμως να μπει το σωστό setting και να δοθεί η σωστή προσοχή στην εκάστοτε περίπτωση. Σε σύγκριση με Pixel 6a, βγάζει παραπλήσιες (οχι όμως ίδιες) σε ποιότητα με λίγη προσπάθεια. Ειδικά οι νυχτερινές (με το Night vision mode) είναι πάρα πολύ καλές!
2) Η απόδοση της μπαταρίας φαίνεται να έχει πέσει σε αισθητό βαθμό, αν και δεν παίζει μεγάλο ρόλο (τουλάχιστον για τη χρήση που κάνω εγώ) καθώς το fast charging είναι άκρως σωτήριο.
