The heroic journey of the hero in his return from war. This is a new edition from the Library of Classical Literature of the brilliant epic tale of Odysseus and his long journey home from the Trojan War, as well as the legendary temptations, delays, and dangers he faced at every turn. Homer's classic poem includes Odysseus's encounters with the beautiful nymph Calypso; the royal yet crafty Circe; the Lotus-Eaters, who gave his men the drug that robbed them of their memory; the man-eating, one-eyed Cyclops; the cannibal giants, Laestrygonians; the souls of the dead in Hades; the enchanting Sirens; the treacherous Scylla and Charybdis. Here, too, is the faithful wife of the hero, Penelope, who weaves a shroud by day and unravels it by night, in order to fend off the many suitors trying to take Odysseus's place. The works attributed to Homer include the two oldest and greatest European epic poems, the Odyssey and the Iliad. These texts have a long history in the Library of Classical Literature with a faithful and literary translation by A. T. Murray. George Dimock has modernized the Loeb Odyssey, with a rendition that preserves Murray's marvelous style but has been articulated for contemporary readers. The two-volume edition includes a new introduction, notes, and an index.
