The name of the Virgin Mary comes from the hymn of the Compline "Aspile, Amolynte, Akrante..." composed by the monk Paul of the monastery of Euergetis. In Orthodox iconography, the Amolyntos is also called the Virgin of the Passion, because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding in their hands the symbols of the Passion, namely the Cross, the Lance, and the Sponge.
