This book, written by a Greek from Pontus, is yet another authentic testimony to the weight and depth of the Greek presence in Asia Minor, the Caucasus, Southern Russia, and the Black Sea region.
Written shortly before his death, this brief autobiography of Charalambos Vasiliadis describes his odyssey-like adventures until he becomes a refugee for the fifth and final time in the border town of Florina.
Like a cinematic film, the years of his life in the Caucasus unfold: his childhood, the uniquely intense relationship with his father, his first love, and his first escape to the Pontic villages of Novorossiysk, where his encounter with his uncle Stathis marked the final stage before his definitive departure from his family home to enlist in the Russian army.
During this most characteristic period of his life as a Cossack lieutenant, he will witness the shocking events of the Russo-German front, the October Revolution, and the relentless struggle between the Whites and Bolsheviks until the latter prevail, leading him to his final refugee status "after many adventures with dead and injured on every side I passed, and many disguises," in Greece.
In this last essentially phase of his life, he will find a permanent refuge, where he will spend the greater part of his life, as he simply captures in the fourth part of his autobiography.
A book of memory, but not only. An autobiography that, beyond the purely personal story, describes in a simple, experiential, and unpretentious way a significant period coinciding with the Genocide of Pontic Hellenism, of this Greek border guard, rooted in the region of Pontus and the Caucasus for more than three millennia.
