When Esther Greenwood wins an internship at a New York fashion magazine in 1953, she is thrilled, believing she will finally realize her dream of becoming a writer. However, between cocktails and stacks of manuscripts, her life begins to spiral out of control. She finds herself on a trajectory of severe depression, as she tries to cope with difficult relationships and a society that refuses to take her ambitions seriously. "The Bell Jar", the only novel by Sylvia Plath, was originally published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. The novel is partially based on Plath's life and her descent into mental illness, and it has become a modern classic.
