She finds herself on a trajectory of severe depression, as she tries to cope with difficult relationships and a society that refuses to take her ambitions seriously. "The Bell Jar", the only novel by Sylvia Plath, was originally published in 1963 under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas. The novel is partially based on Plath's life and her descent into mental illness, and it has become a modern classic.
