Description & Specifications

The first and foremost, basic analysis of the critical years 1848-1875 offers a penetrating approach to the rise of capitalism worldwide. In the 1860s, a new word entered the world's economic and political vocabulary: 'capitalism'. The global triumphant march of capitalism is the main theme of history in the decades after 1848. It was the triumph of a society that believed economic development was based on competitive private enterprise, on the success of buying anything in the cheapest market (including labor) and selling it in the most expensive. An economy structured like this, and therefore naturally supported by the healthy foundations of a bourgeoisie that had advanced to its position through energy, capacity, and intelligence, would create - as they believed - a world of adequately distributed material abundance and continuously increasing understanding, reason, and human opportunity, as well as progress in sciences and arts, in short, a world of continuous and accelerating material and moral progress.
