Most historians will admit that historical writings are the product of selective reading of data. History is not so much the substance of a reality, but rather the substance of an interpretation, shaped not only by time and space but also by the power of relationships.

Many historians will concede that the existing writings for most historical periods are inherently limited and biased. The terms history and prehistory, rather than being equivalent, reflect a bias in favor of written records. Where there is no text, it is said, there is no history, but only a pre-reading of history. This designation diminishes the significance of prehistory.
