The current edition is divided into four sections.
- The first section includes 7 preludes BWV 924-931 from the "Klavierbüchlein" for Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. These are authentic works by Johann Sebastian Bach composed in 1720, except for preludes no. 3 BWV 927 and no. 6 BWV 925, which were added later by W.F. Bach and are likely his early compositions.
- The 6 preludes of the second section BWV 933-938 were written during the period 1717-1720 and may have been arranged in this order by Bach himself according to tonality and difficulty.
- The 6 preludes of the third section BWV 939-943 (1717), BWV 999 (1720) come from the collection of Johann Peter Kellner (1705-1772), a student of Bach.
- The fourth section includes one double fugue BWV 961, two three-part fugues BWV 952-953, two preludes with fugues BWV 902a, BWV 899, and two preludes with fugues BWV 900, BWV 895.
