WELCOME TO CARAVAL, WHERE NOTHING IS QUITE WHAT IT SEEMS . . .

Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.

Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.

When the sisters' long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show's mastermind organiser, Legend.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

Review this product
  • Paper quality
  • Was it easy to read?
  • Was it interesting enough?
  • I liked the writing style
  • I would read a book by the same author
  • I would recommend it for reading
  • ▪️Spice level: 1/5
⚠️Trigger warnings: attempted sexual assault, abusive parent, suicide, murder, psychological games
▫️A few words about the book: Caraval is the first book of an exceptional fantasy trilogy that revolves around our protagonist Scarlett, who lives with her sister isolated from the rest of the world because of their father. Nevertheless, she gets her hands on an invitation to see the legendary Caraval game... in which she ends up participating as well!
▪️Book style/writing: It's simple and understandable, without complicated vocabulary. Quite atmospheric with beautiful descriptions, I could even call them theatrical.
▫️Why I loved it: I liked it because the plot is fast-paced with plenty of plot twists that continue throughout the series. It has pretty good character development and gives you motivation at the end to continue the series with the other books! It definitely deserves the hype it has and personally, it did not disappoint me. Maybe I would have liked a bit more spice, but I understand that it is a book that follows a more romantic character.
▪️Why you should read it: If you are looking for something with a little spice that is also suitable for 12+, then this book is for you. It has quite good worldbuilding and will definitely draw you into the world of Caraval, its magic... and/or its illusions!
