This book aims to present an introductory and interpretive study of the Egyptian myth of the conflict between Osiris and Typhon-Seth, as narrated by one of the most significant Greek writers of late antiquity, Plutarch.
The author provides an overview of Plutarch's relationship with Egypt, the Egyptian language, and the worship of Osiris, analyzes the existing information on the sources, structure, and time and place of composition of the treatise, and comments on the religious background of the original Egyptian myth, connecting the myth of Isis and Osiris with parallel myths from Greece, Phoenicia, and Mesopotamia.
A significant portion of the material comes from the information preserved by both Greek as well as Demotic and Coptic magical papyri, while interesting testimonies regarding the worship of Egyptian gods found in classical, later, and ecclesiastical Greek and Latin writers are also presented.
