For the first time in Greece, directly from the Chinese original text, we have the edition of one of the most significant texts of Chinese culture. The Analects are indeed regarded by the most prominent sinologists as the fundamental text of Chinese literature, as for over two thousand years, for the scholars of China as well as for millions of ordinary people, it has been the primary code of ethics, the source of their spirituality.
The Analects also serve as the only source of authentic information about the life and work of Confucius (551-479 B.C.), the man who has been completely identified with the culture of China, but also with East Asia in general, to the point that he is considered the founder and the main exponent of it.
Sotiris Chalikiadis has taken on a titanic work, and this is evident in every line of his work. Dedicated for at least two decades to unraveling this particular text, but also to Sinology in general, he essentially rewrote Confucian thought in Greek.
However, what constitutes his most significant contribution is an extensive presentation of the fundamental concepts of Confucius's teachings through the semantic analysis of the corresponding ideograms, without which one understands that it is impossible to grasp this thought, and which can be considered exemplary, setting a high standard for any similar future endeavor.
