Description & Specifications

Berlin, 1931. In the underworld of Berlin, a struggle for supremacy is raging. American gangster Abraham Goldstein is staying at the Excelsior Hotel. Doing a favor for the FBI, the police have assigned detective Gereon Ratt to keep him under surveillance.

As he begins to grow bored and takes on a morally dubious case for his friend Johann Marlow, he soon finds himself in the midst of a war on the streets of Berlin.

Meanwhile, his occasional partner Charlie allows a young woman she is interrogating to escape, and soon her investigations will intersect with Ratt's. Berlin is a divided city where two worlds are about to collide: the world of the American gangster and the flourishing Nazism.

This is the third book featuring the detective Gereon Ratt, which inspired the popular television series Babylon Berlin. German author Volker Kutscher skillfully captures the crime and corruption in 1930s Berlin, which is decaying in the shadow of Nazism.
