Description

Perhaps for the first time, an attempt is made to present, even at the level of an introduction and yet in an objective and multi-faceted manner, the institution of royalty as it was applied in modern Greece. This is an effort at clarification that would address most of the related questions and problems.

The reader, having access to data about the civic profile of the Greek through the ages and his relationships with political power in all its forms, is able to understand why, after the end of the Greek people's struggle for Independence, this regime was chosen as the most suitable for managing the affairs of the newly born country.

This choice prevailed due to the European context, the pressing need to put an end to internal conflicts, but also because of the political ideas inherited from the Greco-Byzantine past. The author first presents the trajectory of the royal institution, seeking its deepest legitimation among the people, while emphasizing the constitutional dimension, the profound contradictions of constitutional texts, and the precariousness of the "crowned democracy" regime.

He then introduces three emblematic figures of the dynasty, carefully distinguishing, in the cases of Constantine I and Queen Frederica, myth from historical reality. The third section is dedicated to the philanthropic activities of members of both dynasties in times of peace as well as in times of war, and to this other dimension of royalty that is connected to the soul and the notions of myth, communion, offering, and love.

The work concludes with an evaluation of the causes and a reflection on the events that led to the loosening, especially after 1967 and the colonels' junta, of this strong yet difficult relationship between the Greek people and their kings.
