Description

On April 12, 1945, Roosevelt dies. Harry Truman, who succeeds him, does not even know about the Manhattan Project for the creation of the first atomic bomb. With the pace of a spy thriller, the most comprehensive depiction of one of the most important moments in human history unfolds.

The esteemed journalist Chris Wallace does not settle for describing the bombings and the devastation they caused, but focuses on the conflicts and doubts of the political and military leadership, as well as the concerns of the scientists. At the same time, he sheds light on the events from the perspective of those who played key roles in the decision-making and execution, while presenting the lives of American and Japanese citizens during wartime with immediacy and sensitivity: from the "Calutron girls" in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to ten-year-old Hideko Tamura, who survives Hiroshima but loses her mother, later emigrating to the USA, and American soldiers fighting in the Pacific, waiting in fear for the order to invade Japan.

Revealing narrative... Hiroshima 1945 is filled with shocking details. THE New York Times Book Review

THE DECISION THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

Should the Allies have invaded Japan? Should the US have dropped the atomic bomb? Were there other options to end World War II? Why was it the hardest decision ever made by a US President? What do Truman's diaries reveal about the sleepless nights and severe headaches that plagued him?

"Jesus Christ and General Jackson put their hand on it!" Truman exclaimed when he hung up the phone, unable to hide his agitation. He tried to keep his composure. To those present, he said he had to go to the White House, where he was urgently requested. Indeed, he rose from his seat and walked to the door. Having already grabbed the doorknob to open it, he paused and said, "Guys, and let's keep this between us, something must have happened." Once he had closed the door behind him, Truman began to cross the Capitol again, which had meanwhile emptied, this time almost running. His footsteps echoed clearly in the marble corridors as he passed first in front of statues of generals and politicians and then the senators' barbershop before ascending the stairs leading to his private office. He entered almost out of breath, hastily took his hat, and said to his associates, "I'm going to the White House, but don't let a word slip to anyone about where I am."
