The Cisco StackWise-480 technology is based on the successful StackWise technology, which is a high-performance stacking architecture. StackWise-480 has a bandwidth of 480 Gbps. It uses Cisco IOS Software SSO to provide resilience within the stack. The stack operates as a single switching unit managed by an "active" switch elected from the member switches. The active switch automatically elects a standby switch within the stack. The active switch creates and updates all switching/routing/wireless information and continuously synchronizes this information with the standby switch. In the event of a failure of the active switch, the standby switch takes over the role of the active switch and continues to keep the stack operational. Access points remain connected during the transition from the active to the standby switch. A functioning stack can accept new members or delete old ones without service interruption. The StackWise-480 creates a highly resilient single unified system of up to nine switches, providing simplified management through a single IP address, a single Telnet session, a single CLI, automatic version control, automatic upgrades, automatic configuration, and more. Additionally, StackWise-480 allows local switching on Cisco Catalyst 3850 Series Switches.
