Saffron is characterized by its bioactive components, crocins and safranal, which are responsible for the spice's aroma and its characteristic red color.

There is evidence that crocins act as inhibitors of dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake, while safranal primarily acts on serotonin reuptake.

There is also evidence that saffron's antioxidants protect against oxidative stress in the central nervous system, providing a second possible mechanism of therapeutic action.

The curcumin is the main curcuminoid found in the rhizome of turmeric. Tetrahydrocurcumin is the main active substance of curcumin and can provide higher antioxidant effects and additional neuroprotective action.
