Description

The Dogmatic of Vincenzo Damodou (1700-1754) is included in four voluminous manuscripts that are kept in the library of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, with a total of 6,088 pages. These manuscripts were saved in the Monastery by the Vatopedin Monk Nikodimos Karousos, a student of Vincenzo Damodou and a rhetorician of the M.T.C.E., who even went to Vienna in 1788 to publish the Dogmatic, after obtaining the necessary approval from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, but did not succeed because he died on August 18, 1788. Even Patriarch Joachim III, who had read the manuscript of the Dogmatic in Vienna, made efforts to publish it without achieving the desired result. The learned Metropolitan of Thessaliotis Ezekiel, who considers Damodou "one of the very wise and greatest teachers of the Church", writes "the publication (of the Dogmatic) will bring great honor to the publisher and benefit to the poor branch of Orthodox Dogmatic Theology". In 1940, the learned Aghio Pavlos Archimandrite Loukianos Depountis, in a study describing the unpublished Dogmatic of Damodou, wishes to find the "Maikinas" who will publish it...

In his extensive Dogmatic, Damodou does not write anything of his own, he does not improvise, he may use the scientific methods of his time, but he presents the teaching of the Fathers, whom he characterizes as "luminaries, teachers, and eminent theologians of the Church". He sets the purity of the heart as a prerequisite for true, authentic theology, not on a moralistic but on an ontological level, because "the pure in heart shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). Damodou emphasizes that the true theologian is not the one who speaks intellectually, intellectually about God, but the one who has "every virtue and holiness".
