In February 2011, the students of the Department of Architectural Engineering at Frederick University had their first direct encounter with the built cultural heritage of the region, documenting and analyzing the Church of the Virgin Mary of Chrysokourdaliotissa in Kourdali and the Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas at the Monastery of the same name in Orounta.
Today, ten years later, the catalog of historical buildings and monuments that were documented and analyzed includes dozens of cases of significant structures that had long awaited this interaction with the new generation of architects from Cyprus and Greece.
This book presents 24 selected monuments studied by professors and students of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the University during the decade from 2011 to 2021. The collection, processing, and final presentation of the monuments were carried out by the Research Unit of Historical Building Systems, of which this work represents the first printed result of the long-term collective effort.
This reveals the past of expertise, with its positive and negative aspects. Experiences of successes and weaknesses are conveyed. The creator learns more safely to chart their own personal path in their inventive future and develops the ability to ensure the integrity of the monuments they inherited, so they can hand them over to the hands and hearts of future generations.
Hope is also born that the new creator will continue the long list of cultural treasures with the forthcoming addition of their own successes.
