The term "Neoplatonism" was created in the 19th century to indicate the final phase of ancient Platonism, which included elements of Platonic philosophy, mysticism, and religion, and became the dominant philosophical trend until the end of antiquity.
Inspired by Plato's school of thought, Neoplatonic philosophers found themselves at the crossroads between two eras: the ancient world that was fading away, and the era of Christianity that was emerging.
Neoplatonism was a powerful philosophical movement with religious conceptions, with interpretive elements based on Platonic and Aristotelian philosophy, but at the same time introduced a new way of thinking, judging, and interpreting, beyond existing philosophy.
Neoplatonic philosophers often clashed with Christian thought, but they approached the idea of the "One" more than ever. The purpose of philosophy for Neoplatonists is the mystical union of the human soul with the higher entities, and especially the One. Just as for Plato and Socrates, philosophy is a way of life for Neoplatonists.
