Useful information about canes

• You may find it useful to use a cane if you have a problem with balance or instability, weakness in your leg or torso, or if you are suffering from an injury or pain.
• The top of the cane should reach your wrist when you are standing upright. Your elbow should bend slightly when holding the cane.
• While walking, the cane and the injured leg should touch the ground simultaneously.
• To go upstairs, hold the handrail and first support yourself on your good leg, with the cane in the hand opposite the injured leg.
• Adjust your space by removing any obstacles that might cause a fall.
