The flag of Japan, also known as the "Flag of the Sun" (Nisshōki) or Hinomaru ("sun disk"), is white with a large red disk representing the rising sun in the center. According to legend, it dates back to the 13th century when the Buddhist Nichiren is said to have offered this flag to the Emperor of Japan. It was adopted in 1870. The country has had a Constitution since May 3, 1947.
