Description

My friend, when a person lives, they live and remain unseen. So, try, while they are visible, to place a mirror in front of them, as they live under the influence of their passions. Then they either remain astonished and amazed by their own appearance, or they turn their gaze away to avoid seeing themselves, or in a fit of rage, they spit on their own image, or angrily throw a punch to destroy it. And if they cried ‒ they can no longer cry, if they laughed ‒ it is no longer possible for them. Certainly, something unpleasant is born. This unpleasantness is my theater. Luigi Pirandello, interview with Corriere della Sera.

Hersilia Dre is unable to bear her life and attempts, unsuccessfully, to commit suicide. While narrating her reasons, she conceals her weaknesses and hides her moral nudity. The characters in the play, with phrases that, upon first reading, seem irrelevant, incomprehensible, and chaotic, expose the human psyche and each present their own reality.
