This book addresses issues related to critical events such as chronic or severe illness, hospitalization, divorce, and death that may occur in the lives of most children and examines:

• how the child understands these events depending on their age
• how they react to them
• what the implications are both for themselves and for their family, that is, for their parents and siblings
• what measures are required to minimize negative impacts and ensure their adjustment
• how parents can be supported to help them
• what the role of the school is and what actions teachers should take to ensure the child reintegrates into normal school life

The book is aimed at students, educators, parents, and health professionals as it allows for a better understanding of how the child experiences these events, how they react, and suggests the implementation of the measures that have been identified as the most effective in international practice with the aim of ensuring the child’s mental health and the better adjustment of both the child and their family, so that these events can become opportunities for growth, adaptation, and maturity.
