The story begins with the player joining the Ranger Union and undertaking missions in cities and natural environments of Fiore, such as forests, mountains, and caves. Instead of Poké Balls, the player uses the Styler to "draw" around Pokémon on the touch screen to temporarily convince them to help. As the plot progresses, the player faces the Go-Rock Squad, a criminal organization trying to exploit Pokémon for their own purposes. With the help of Minun or Plusle (depending on the character's gender), the Ranger overcomes obstacles, solves puzzles, and restores balance to the area.
In Pokémon Ranger for Nintendo DS, the player takes on the role of a Ranger in the Fiore region, using the special Capture Styler tool to temporarily cooperate with Pokémon and protect nature from threats, instead of capturing them like traditional Trainers.
