Description

This study deals with the Revolution of 1878 in Thessaly shortly before its annexation to the national body. It is mainly based on the archival material of the Diplomatic Historical Archive (YDIA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, specifically on the reports, mostly unpublished, of the diplomats of that era, the consul in Larissa Ioannis R. Palamidis and the vice-consul in Volos Ioannis D. Tziotis, two relatively unknown diplomats of the time, who served selflessly in the Thessalian region. The study, also supported by other sources and literature, highlights unknown aspects of the Ottoman atrocities across Thessaly, touching on neighboring Macedonian areas, the revolutionary unrest, the role of national companies, aspects of the war events, the broader historical context of the era, the international diplomatic scene, the "amnesty" towards the revolutionaries, the Ottoman vacillations after the Treaty of Berlin, and scenes from the liberation. The book contains rare diplomatic sources.

The Defense, with the first president being the "national" historian Constantine Paparrigopoulos and later the well-known professor of the Law School of the University of Athens and minister in many governments Pavlos Kalligás, gathered important personalities such as the governor of the National Bank Markos Reniéris, the banker Ioannis Dumas, the lawyer Stephanos Dragoumis, and others. The Defense, as a continuation of the national committees that had dealt with the Cretan revolution and with many branches in provincial centers and members abroad, especially wealthy Greek expatriates, focused its activities on collecting financial resources and purchasing arms, on forming shooting clubs for the military training of men of all ages, on gathering information about the situation in the Greek provinces under Ottoman rule, and on preparing for the care of victims and their families in anticipation of the outbreak of revolutions.
