The trial of Socrates is a historical event that not only marked the political history of Athens. By creating, or rather completing, the myth of Socrates, it led to the creation of a new literary genre, the Socratic dialogues, dialogues featuring Socrates as the main character. At the same time, this trial, by pushing Plato towards philosophy, deeply influenced the history of what we call Western philosophy. In the Apology, Plato presents the self-defensive speech of his teacher, which he claims to have heard himself. In the Crito, Socrates, considering that he was wronged by people and not by the laws of Athens, explains to his close friend why his escape would be contrary to justice and remains in his position to be executed.
