This volume is a critical anthology that encompasses all studies and critical texts regarding the work and personality of the poet Angelos Sikelianos. In the Introduction, it attempts to provide a comprehensive overview and critical assessment of the literature, from 1909 (the publication of "Alafroiskiotis") to the present day.
In the Anthology that follows, it offers the most representative texts and the most noteworthy critical and interpretive opinions, whether positive or dissenting. It has been written that Sikelianos is the poet of the future. And, as it appears, the future that was spoken of in the 1950s is already present, as in the emerging 21st century, Sikelianos's work gains a stunning relevance.
If we must summarize the critical assessments of Sikelianos's relevance, we would note that the poet was the first to theoretically confront the prospect of a global society at an unsuspecting time, but in the direction of revisioning rather than imposing the dominant Western model. A revisioning based on a universal cultural model that serves and does not alienate humanity, that synthesizes rather than flattens the cultural traditions of peoples, that liberates and secures rather than enslaves and annihilates homelands and peoples.
