Hemostatic forceps are a manual, jointed instrument used for grasping and holding objects. The jaws are used when fingers cannot attract small items or when multiple items need to be held simultaneously. They are also used to hold slippery objects or for aseptic purposes.

Mechanically, forceps use the principle of leverage to hold something and apply pressure. Surgical forceps are typically made from high-quality steel. High-carbon steel ensures that the instruments can withstand repeated sterilization in high-temperature autoclaves. Some forceps, designed for single-use and then disposal, are made from plastic.

There are two main types of forceps:

• Non-locking (often referred to as "forceps" or "pick-ups").
• Locking (create a secure grip on the object).

Locking forceps are almost always jointed in the middle and use various mechanisms to lock the gripping surfaces in a closed position.
